Embracing the Magic of a Rainy Dublin Elopement – Here’s What You Must Know!

Being an elopement photographer in Dublin is amazing but it doesn’t come without it’s challenges from the Irish weather! I always say you can’t stop the rain so just embrace it.

Thinking about a Dublin elopement or planning a romantic couples/engagement photoshoot? Dublin City had a massive choice to suit all tastes. It’s charming cobblestone streets, historic landmarks, and stunning coastal views make it a dreamy spot to kick off your holiday as well as get those stunning picture in!

But there’s one thing you must prepare for with a Dublin elopement—Ireland’s unpredictable weather!

Whether you’re planning an elopement in Dublin or an engagement photoshoot, here’s how to make the most of the experience—even if it rains! And it might. It just might!

1. Work with a Dublin Elopement Photographer Who Knows How to Shoot in the Rain

Not all photographers are comfortable shooting in rainy conditions, so it’s important to choose someone who:

Cami & Zach’s Dublin Elopement

Cami and Zach eloped from the states with their close family and friends. It was the most romanatic day that started at The Clarence Hotel followed by loads of pics in the city.

  • Has experience with moody, romantic rain shots
  • Knows how to use natural light on cloudy days

Can pivot quickly to alternative locations if needed

Personally, I don’t mind some drizzle. Rainy days can be romantic. If you’re happy to get a little wet then so am I!

A professional Dublin elopement photographer (like me!) will know how to turn raindrops into magic. Some of the most cinematic wedding and engagement photos happen in the rain!

I always suggest to bring a brollie, layer up the clothes and embrace the Irish weather.

2. Choose Locations with Rain-Friendly Backdrops

Dublin is full of beautiful locations for engagement and elopement photos, some of which offer shelter or nearby indoor options.

Som of my favourite spots as a Dublin elopement photographer for all types of couples shoots that look better in the rain are:

Howth Cliffs – Misty ocean views create a dramatic, romantic feel.
St. Stephen’s Green – A dreamy park with stone archways for cover.
Temple Bar District – Vibrant streets with charming pubs to duck into.
he Ha’penny Bridge & River Liffey – Iconic Dublin views, even in light drizzle.

Indoor & covered options for a cozy vibe for a Dublin elopement session:

Trinity College Library – A breathtaking, Harry Potter-style backdrop.
Christ Church Cathedral Cloisters – Gothic arches add timeless romance.
The Long Hall Pub – Cozy, vintage Irish pub with warm lighting. (there are loads of options for authentic Irish Pubs.
Guinness Storehouse Rooftop Bar – Indoor comfort + stunning city views.

By choosing locations with covered areas, you can easily transition between indoor and outdoor shots without stress.

3. Embrace the Mood – Rain Can Be Romantic!

A little rain adds drama and depth to photos, making them feel like scenes from a romance movie. Some of the most beautiful wedding and engagement photos feature misty landscapes, raindrops on cobblestone streets, and cozy, intimate moments under an umbrella.

PRO TIP: Bring a clear or vintage umbrella! It keeps you dry while still allowing natural light to shine through for gorgeous photos.

4. Dress for the Weather for a couples photoshoot in Dublin (Without Sacrificing Style!)

Dublin’s weather can be chilly, windy, and wet, so plan outfits that are both stylish and practical.

For ladies: Consider a dress with sleeves, a chic wrap, or a stylish trench coat.
For gents: A tweed or wool suit looks timeless and keeps you warm.
Footwear matters! Cobblestone streets get slippery—opt for block heels, stylish boots, or even elegant wellies for a fun, quirky touch! NEVER heels!

Bonus tip: Choose fabrics that flow beautifully in the wind—they create stunning movement in photos!

5. Plan for Cozy Warm-Up Breaks

Many of my couples would love to shoot at The Howth Summit, Killiney Hill or venture out to Glendalough. I’m up for it! I love the outdoor shoots but it’s important to have a backup plan. I know that you will have limited and jam packed days on your trip in Ireland so instead of cancelling if it rains, let’s just choose cosy spots in Dublin City. Just as authentic!

Best cozy spots for a mid-shoot break:

Café en Seine – Gorgeous Parisian-style interiors.
Peruke & Periwig – A moody, candlelit cocktail bar.
The Brazen Head – Ireland’s oldest pub with cozy nooks for photos.
The Shelbourne Hotel Lounge – Elegant, historic charm for a classy touch.

A steaming cup of Irish coffee or a Guinness toast makes for a great candid shot!

6. Have a Flexible Backup Plan

Dublin weather can change by the hour, so having a Plan B is essential.

Plan A: Your dream outdoor location.
Plan B: Covered spots or indoor venues nearby.
Plan C: Reschedule to a better weather window (if time allows).

An experienced Dublin engagement photographer will help you adapt and make the most of any conditions!

Let the Weather Be Part of Your Story

Instead of stressing over the forecast, embrace the magic of Dublin’s weather. The mist, raindrops, and soft cloudy light can make your photos feel even more authentic, cinematic, and romantic. Whether you’re planning an elopement in Dublin, a surprise engagement shoot, or just a romantic couples’ session, a little rain can make it even more unforgettable.
